Palace of Westminster

Palace of Westminster
= Houses of Parliament

Hello everyone! Today´s post is about Palace of Westminster or if you want- Houses of Parliament.

The first royal palace was built in the 11th century (1066) and it was the primary residence of the Kings of England until 1512, when fire destroyed much of the complex. It was the home of the Parliament of England, which had been meeting there since the 13th century and it was also for the Royal Courts of Justice.

It was really important during the Middle Ages because of its strategic location on the banks of the river Thames. From 1016 to 1035 it was a royal residence for the king Canute the Great (Knut I. Veliký). In madeival times, the place where Palace of Westminster stands nowadays was called Thorney Island. The oldest existing part of the Palace is Westminster Hall.

In 1534, Henry VIII got the area from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (minister) and he changed its name to Palace of Whitehall. Henry used it as his principal residence and it was also used by the two Houses of Parliament. It was originally a royal residence - it didn´t have special rooms for events,so important state ceremonies were held in the Painted Chamber  and The House of Lords met in the Queen's Chamber.

In 16 October 1834 the fire destroyed the building. Westminster Hall was saved thanks to fire-fighting efforts and a change in the direction of the wind. In February 1836 a commission chose Charles Barry´s plan for reconstruction (they chose it from 97 proposals). Barry built the palace in neo- gothic style.  Most of the work was finished in 1860.

The New Palace nowadays is owned by the Queen  Eisabeth II. in right of the Crown. It is the meeting place of the House of Commons (dolní sněmovna) and the House of Lords(sněmovna lordů) , the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
