Palace of Westminster = Houses of Parliament Hello everyone! Today´s post is about Palace of Westminster or if you want- Houses of Parliament. The first royal palace was built in the 11th century (1066) and it was the primary residence of the Kings of England until 1512, when fire destroyed much of the complex. It was the home of the Parliament of England , which had been meeting there since the 13th century and it was also for the Royal Courts of Justice. It was really important during the Middle Ages because of its strategic location on the banks of the river Thames. From 1016 to 1035 it was a royal residence for the king Canute the Great (Knut I. Veliký). In madeival times, the place where Palace of Westminster stands nowadays was called Thorney Island. The oldest existing part of the Palace is Westminster Hall.
